Having the right words in place is important, but contributing to the community aspect of the website is just as crucial to your success.
One of the best features of Twitter and similar social networking sites is the ability to connect with others in real time. When you do not contribute to conversations or retweet the informative links of those you follow on occasion, you lose that community aspect of the site. People are less likely to follow you if you are not interacting with others on the site, even if you are sharing some of your best work with great information.
When using Twitter, jump into the conversation from time to time and balance your self-promotion with a bit of friendly banter. You will gain a deeper connection with your followers, and your words will be noticed more often. By keeping the social aspect in your social networking, your chances at success are much higher.
