We’re all looking for the same thing. Fast, effective ways to promote our websites. Our desire for them makes a great deal of sense, too. That’s because the world of online business moves quickly. The things that work today may not work next month. It’s too easy to see a major commitment of time and energy wasted due to one of the frequent shifts of the internet landscape.

When we can do small things—fast things—that produce a measurable advantage, we do them. Even if they don’t last indefinitely, they can produce results long enough to be worth our time investment.

The problem, especially for many new marketers, is finding these techniques and learning how to implement them efficiently. There are multiple “small text strategies”–approaches that require little effort but can produce meaningful results—but too many people don’t even know they’re out there.

I strongly recommend that people find them. And that they find a system for efficient implementation. Little things can mean so much—when they’re done correctly. And they can get the job done with remarkable speed.

That’s a great instinct. It demonstrates the entrepreneurial courage and commitment to action necessary to succeed. It isn’t the only way to approach the idea, though. Sometimes, a little change can produce a big difference. In some situations, a series of little changes can be even more powerful.

We’re talking about the little things out there that so many marketers ignore. Simple, easy to implement strategies that yield impressive results when done efficiently and correctly. You can call them “small text strategies” (because they don’t require much content writing or production). And they can breathe life into your business.

If you aren’t using these small text approaches, you’re leaving cash behind every day. Those who know how to utilize them quickly invariably experience great results. Get up to speed as soon as possible and add a collection of small text tricks to your marketing repertoire.

One little change can make a huge difference.

Writing a blog comment that gets people to sit up, take notice, and click through to your site can be tough. Engaging with blog authors and readers is a fantastic way to build your credibility and become a part of the online community, but you need to be sure that you are doing it right.

The most important rule when writing a blog comment is to add something relevant to the conversation. Whether it be your reasons for agreeing with the author, or a counterpoint to something they said, make sure that your comments are useful.

Keep your comment short and sweet. Remember that you are writing in response to a post. If your reply is much longer than a paragraph, consider writing your own post with your own unique points, rather than taking up the space needed for a soliloquy.

Be respectful, even when you strongly disagree with the author. Comments are not a place for personal attacks and grievances. You can certainly state your own opinion on the matter, but don’t call names or belittle the author or others who have left comments.

When you are considered a part of the blog community, your own website will get page views, simply because of your thoughtful contributions to conversations on blogs.

Tags: author comments, SEO, Twitter,

There’s one thing we know about doing business online. What works this year might not work next year. In fact, this week’s hot technique may be dead and buried within a few days. The Internet moves quickly and it rewards those who keep their eyes open for good SEO and site promotion strategies.

It can be frustrating, though. It’s tough to put forth a lot of effort on something new, only to see its value bottom out shortly after you close the book on a project.

That’s why it makes so much sense to find ways to promote your site that are easy to implement, rocket fast, and anything but labor-intensive. When you’re using these techniques, you’ll still generate enough profit to justify your activity—even if the “rules” of online business change again.

And that’s why it pays to master small text promotional strategies. These are the quick, in and out techniques that produce real value in record time. There’s nothing wrong with embracing a big, solid strategy, but you should always keep your eyes open for the fast ways to get the job done.

Writing AdWords headlines is one of the most important things that you need to do for your AdWords campaigns. The first step in the process is finding the right keywords for your product or website, but beyond that you need to use power words within your headlines that will make people act. Here are a few power words that grab the attention of readers and get them interested in clicking on your ad.

Free – Everyone loves something for free, so if you can offer a freebie in your headline you will get a great response. Just be sure that you stay within the AdWords terms of service for your freebie.

Secret – People love to find out secrets, and if you might have a secret answer to their problem, they will want to know what it is.

Proven – When people are shopping, having the feeling that they are buying something that has been tested and proven can be a huge selling factor.

Immediate – Most people have a need for instant gratification, so appealing to their sense of urgency can make sales.

Your Twitter profile space gives you one tiny little area to provide a bio. You can add one URL in the area. That’s it. For a service that wants to encourage a great deal of social interaction and to facilitate contact and relationship-building, that’s not a lot of space.

That’s why you need to create your own space. While Twitter strictly limits the area in which you can place text and live links, it gives you free reign to create a graphical background for your profile page. While trumpeting your URL as part of a graphic isn’t as helpful as a clickable url, it beats nothing at all. All of that space also gives you a chance to share more about yourself and your business.

If you’re using a default Twitter background or are otherwise failing to use the space that is available to you, make a point of becoming more aggressive. Claim the territory. If you aren’t capable of doing the background generation yourself, there are free sites available that can create a reasonably compelling background for you. Or, you can hire someone to do something special.

Don’t settle for that one little area. Create some space to improve your Twitter experience.

Every good copywriter has a swipe file. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s pretty easy to understand. Writers evaluate the work of other writers. They look for good pieces—copy that’s been highly successful—and they keep a copy of it. Why? To study it and to learn from it. They’re interested in figuring out what makes things work and being surrounded by “masterpieces” can be a way to wake up one’s muse. It’s not much different than a budding artist hanging out at the Louvre in hopes of finding that spark of inspiration.

Some people, however, take the “swipe” part of “swipe file” too literally. They look at great copy—particularly headlines—and basically steal them for their own use. This is often done clumsily, utilizing no more than basic word substitution. If they need copy about “widgets”, they’ll take a good “gadgets” headline and just switch out one word for the other.

Hopefully you can spot the ethical problems with that appropriation of intellectual property without much help. You should also know that the swiping technique doesn’t produce good content. Removed from context and lacking uniqueness, the re-manufactured headlines rarely produce good results.

Feel free to build a swipe file.
Stop short of swiping.

Pay-per-click campaigns, such as AdWords, can be a cost effective way to advertise your business, only paying for views and clicks from those who are searching for your related keywords. So how do you get your ad noticed, among all the other competing for the same pair of eyes?

Making your headline stand out is all about using the right words within your ad. Knowing what makes a buyer or searcher want to click and see what you have to offer or find out your opinion on their problem is important. Tell them exactly why your site is where they want to go to find the answers.

Use powerful words to grab their attention and tell them what they will gain by clicking through. Testimonials, endorsements, and posing questions are good ways to get people to pay attention and click on your ads. The basic principles of writing headlines always apply, even within advertising headlines.

Some of these techniques work better within different industries and searches, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a bit of trial and error to get the words just right. Once you find the right technique to reach your target audience, your campaigns will become much more successful and profitable for your business.

Blog comments are a wonderful way to indirectly promote your business or website, the operative word being indirectly. When commenting on blogs to garner attention for your site, the best way to go about doing so is by being subtle. Plastering your links and blog portfolio within a comment on a blog will do little more than give you the label of comment spammer.

When making a comment, do more than praise the author and link back to your own site with a similar post, “helpful” link, or other self-promotional attempt. Contribute to the conversation with your own opinions, insights, or explain why you agree. Choose your words carefully and thoughtfully, and the author and other readers will want to see and hear more from you.

Leave links in the URL field of the comment box, not in the text of your comment, unless you have something very important to contribute. Readers know that a hyperlinked name is a website or blog link, and they will click through to read if they think that your comment is a positive addition to the conversation.

By being a good steward in blog comments and writing thoughtful words that contribute to the conversation, you can get the attention you want without being overly promotional.
